    Bestest, the journey continues #4

Sid is at his school, and Vic and other friends are asking him about his improved performance in the subjects he was struggling with. Sid mentions that he is now more comfortable with these subjects and hence is faring better. His friends who were together with him in the struggle with science and math now look up to him as a role model and seek his advice. While Sid has been helping them, he has been discreet about the book and its secrets.

Sid has now also learnt to be humble about his progress and not cease his practice and preparation. He has a set time of the day for studies, he takes interest in the subjects he once neglected and he does not waste his time being distracted in classes and at tuitions but rather makes most of this time in picking up what is being discussed. His class quiz scores show improvement, and there is a pep in his step. He can look eye to eye and engage with the ‘Best Test’ group. Sid is satisfied with his progress and doesn’t see an immediate need for going back to the wise man’s book.

With time, grows Sid’s popularity and he now finds himself among the decent students of the class. But little does he realise that with this success, the expectation from him has also grown. He is now competing with better peers, his parents have hopes and he also finds himself under pressure to maintain his results. It is then that Sid wonders to himself that had he been brighter and smarter like Vic and his ‘Best Test’ group, he would have seen more success. Sid’s progress hasn’t gone down well with some of the better faring students who now see him as a competitor.

Jac is one such peer who finds Sid breathing down his neck. He is not very pleased about it, and has ramped up his own preparation and tutions to ensure Sid doesn’t surpass him. He has been curt to Sid in the class and also talking behind his back. Many a times he has interfered when Sid was about to speak and not missed a chance to show his superiority against Sid. Sid finds all this weird as this was new to him. Being at the bottom in the class had not exposed him to such behaviour and reactions. But gradually such incidences had started to get onto him and irritate him during and after class.

He found himself embroiled in this cat and mouse game and it took a toll on his well being. At times, he felt sidelined by his own peers and at other times he felt himself regress to where he belonged. Days went by and the exams were round the corner. The situation and expectations had found him wanting for more. He also got to know that Jac was taking some special pill to sharpen his mind and that one pill cost more than Sid could imagine. No one knew what side effects the pill had or if it was medically safe, but Jac didn’t mind as he was determined to be better than Sid.

Sid couldn’t take it any longer. The pressure and the stress was getting on to him. And Sid felt like he was out of the game without this pill that Jac had found. Sid felt lost when he decided to take solace in what had earlier got him out from his sticky spot. Sid reaches for his cupboard and takes the wise man’s book out. He looks at it with gratitude, touches it to his heart and turns to the next page. He reads in anticipation –

‘A page from the life of the WISEST of the WISE, it lies within reach and yet eludes all but the BEST of the guys.

Just a DAY WITH it is worth WEEKS when NOT. An HOUR when you POSSESS IT is equivalent to DAYS and NIGHTS WITHOUT.

Faced with a task UPHILL, thou shall need no magic PILL. He who learns to WIELD it at his WILL, shall MASTER the RAREST OF SKILL.

You shall not seek any hocus pocus, when you have VICTORY over the MIND and CONQUERED the art of SUSTAINING FOCUS.’

Sid reads the line again and again, wondering if it was meant for him to find and read. What was the wise man trying to hint at. What was this achievable yet elusive technique that he had to learn. He pondered about it all day. Glad I can still make it without the pill, he thought. But Victory over Mind and Conquering art of Focus was something Sid had never heard of, nor been taught.

Will Sid be able to crack the wise man’s riddle. What was in store for Sid next. Visit again to find out.

    Bestest, the journey continues #3

Sid is at his home watching videos. This time he is not watching his usual entertainment shows though. He is watching videos on science. Ever since he read the advice shared by the wise man, his taste has changed and he is developing a keen interest for the various concept, trivia and facts about science. He reads about it with interest and is able to absorb more of what he didn’t feel like knowing earlier. He is able to see and understand science that is working around him.

Time flies, and Sid has even been more attentive and interested in what Ms. Noronha has been covering in her class, without realising it. Not that anyone noticed or cared, till the day when Ms. Noronha looks around the class and asked Sid a tough question expecting him to fumble as usual. Sid, now that we have understood gravity, can you let us know that if we drop two stones one weighing 5 kg and one weighing 5 g from the top of a skyscraper at the same time, which stone will reach the ground first. Sid stands up and answers with confidence, assuming there is no air resistance, both the stones will reach the ground together. As usual, expecting Sid had given the wrong answer, there were chuckles around the class. But Ms. Noronha stood there staring at Sid, till everyone realised something was amiss. Acknowledging the answer, Ms. Noronha had replied, I am not sure if that was a wild guess Sid, but you are right.

Sid was the cynosure of attention that day. All were taking rounds to congratulate Sid for the amazing answer. Sid felt as if life had come full circle for him. Vic who was also wondering what was up with Sid, asks him what was going on. Though tempted to tell him about the book and how following it had changed his luck, Sid chooses not to tell about it to Vic. The book had found its way into his life at the right moment and Sid felt it was meant to be like that. A little secret that he had to keep to himself. Sid is happy with the way things are turning out and doesn’t bother to continue reading the book.

Sid is happy with his new found popularity and success in class. Days go by and exams arrive. Sid has grown in confidence by now. He is sure of himself and feels if he continues the way he has been, he will do well in the exams. His body language is different these days and he has a different air about himself. He doesn’t bother indulging in post exam gossip or checking on the answers. In the same form, Sid attempts all his exams.

Days go by and soon its time for the exam results. Sid is exited to look at his marks. The assessed answer sheets start flowing in session by session and to Sid’s disappointment he hasn’t fared that well. Though there had been a saving grace in the subjects that he was the worst at, Sid isn’t that impressed with what he had achieved. How stupid of me, he thinks. To believe that following the book was going to change things. It was a lie after all. Sid couldn’t have been more disappointed. Not because of the results, but because his hopes were high and all of a sudden he had found himself back to square one.

Sid goes home that day and lies on the bed disappointed, not knowing what to do. His enthusiasm has faded and optimism subdued. He finds himself get up like a zombie, go to the cupboard and stare inside. His eyes fall on the old book and tears well up. He picks the book and feels like throwing it out of the window. He raises his hand with the book in it. He is about to swing it, when he resists himself. He drops the book on his desk and jumps back into his bed. After a while of struggling with his thoughts, Sid falls asleep.

Sid wakes up to a sound outside. He looks at the clock and its late night. His mom had thought he would get up soon and kept food for him at his table. Sid is very hungry, he gobbles up the food and freshens up. Back at his desk, Sid’s eyes fall on the old book. He picks it up, opens it and turns to the next page. It reads –

‘When daylight fades into the night, is when you should hang on tight. When the end of the road is out of sight, is when champions start developing their strength and might.

A graph that is not CONSISTENT sees a RISE and FALLS before its PRIME. REGULAR PREPARATION and PRACTICE is the common factor that defines those who become Greatest Of ALL TIME.’

Sid gives it a thought and realises that he had got carried away with his initial success. He hadn’t persisted with his preparation. He decides to set a proper time to study, practice and revise, not just for some days but till he is done with the next exam.

Will this lesson learnt by Sid bring him better luck next time. What other hidden pearls of wisdom does the wise man hold in store for him. Stay tuned for more.

    Bestest, the journey continues #2

Sid is elated today. He is glad he has cracked some of the math quiz questions. In the break Sid is chit-chatting with his friends and he finds most of them found the quiz was tough. Sid is now looking at Vic sitting with his ‘Best Test’ group. I wonder what they are discussing he thinks. The bell rings and its time for the Science session. Ms. Noronha would walk in anytime. Sid returns to his seat and fumbles with his science textbook. Science hasn’t been a subject of his liking since the beginning. I wonder what greek and latin Ms. Noronha will ask today, he ponders, Oh God, I just hope she doesn’t ask me to summarise what was covered in the class last time!

Ms. Noronha is standing in front of the class and all the students, other than a few, appear busy looking into their text books. And so is Sid, but obviously he is just avoiding looking at her and risk being asked the question. So class, begins Ms.Noronha, can one of you summarise what we covered last time. There is a flutter of pages being turned. Without looking into your books, she continues. There is a deafening silence. Someone please answer, before she picks one of us up, Sid is thinking to himself. The last bench, one of you, Sid, can you please stand up and answer ….

Sid can’t believe his luck. He gets up slowly. His friends who are breathing a sigh of relief for not being in the spotlight today, can’t resist a chuckle as they watch Sid take an eternity to stand up. Errr, ma’am, can you …. can you please repeat the question …. says Sid. His friends can’t resist the laughter.  Sid, summarise what we covered in the last class. Sid looks around at Ms. Noronha and the entire class staring at him. Ma’am, we covered …. we covered science fiction …. firction …. frict…. tion …. the class bursts into laughter. Ms. Noronha isn’t amused. Silence everyone …. sit down Sid, it shows how serious you are about the subject … but science is going to be around you for a while … as a subject and otherwise. Before Ms. Noronha could continue, Vic stands up and summarises the last session to cover up for Sid.

Sid reaches home, dejected and embarrassed. The laughter in the class, Ms. Noronha’s words, are all ringing in his ears. Science is going to be around … what a fix to be in  … science as a subject …. science all around you …. he thinks to himself. But Ms. Noronha was right, he needed to be serious about the subject. But to Sid, it wasn’t just about seriousness. He couldn’t comprehend half of it and feared when he tried to recall the rest of it. Firction …. friction he was trying to say in the class. Not that he could have explained much about it, and not to mention those formulas … I don’t know what to do, Sid thinks. In all that transpired during the day, Sid has forgotten about the wise man’s book that he has kept carefully at the back of his cupboard.

Few days pass by as usual, without much progress. Sid is back to square one with his studies. But that hasn’t stopped Sid from being his jolly self. He spends his time doing what he likes at home, other than studies of-course. And he still goes around being playful and silly amongst his friends at class. The bell rings. Its math session next. Mr. DSouza walks in. He has got the assessed answer sheets of the quiz that was conducted earlier. The answer sheets with the marks are distributed in the class. Sid gets his paper and he looks at his score. Below it Mr. DSouza has written, Keep it up Sid! Sid is startled back into the reality. The book! My Goodness! How could I forget, its in my cupboard at home …. Sid couldn’t wait to get back home that day.

Sid reaches home and goes straight to his cupboard. He looks inside and heaves a sigh of relief. The book is there where he had kept it. In a jiffy, he turns the page. It reads –

‘While you take a new stride, do not forget to continue what you had tried …..

What I now reveal, is what most during their academics appeal, that this subject they tried, but with it just couldn’t deal.

Most people LEARN what they LIKE. But those who differ, LIKE what they LEARN. Majority miss this, but for those few who know this trick; the DIFFICULT topic, with such conscious interest and liking, subconsciously becomes EASY’

Wonderful! Says Sid. This resonates so much in his case with Science as a subject. He and so many of his friends have had this issue with subjects like science or math. But liking science? conscious liking?  How is that going to change anything, thinks Sid. This must be the ‘All is Well’ equivalent of getting better at difficult or uninteresting subjects. Am sure the wise man would touch upon the how part of it later in the book. And also the outcome of following a bit of what the wise man had said earlier is there to see on my math answer paper. And after what happened in Ms. Noronha’s class …. have to give this a try.

Sid reaches out for his science text book. Science is all around me, this is going to be my favourite subject …. let me see, here this chapter…. friction …. if it wasn’t for friction, it would have been impossible for us to even stand …. how interesting …..

Watch out for what happens to Sid with his new conscious liking for science and what the wise man has in store for him in the coming journey ….

    Bestest Journey Continues #1

    continued:-

Sid couldn’t believe this was happening. Had he by a stroke of luck ended up with one of the best kept academic secrets, that is now in his hand? Was this the light at the end of the tunnel he was looking for since years? Would he be able to walk shoulder to shoulder with Vic in academics and talk eye to eye with the ‘Best Test’ group? Or was this some sinister prank? What magic formula had this wise man stepped on to ? All sorts of thoughts were going on in Sid’s mind. He could hear his heart pounding with excitement. Only way to know was to go through the book he thought. He is about to turn the page, when his phone rings. Its one of his friends, Sid picks the call. ‘Hey Sid, I am worried about the math quiz Mr. D’Souza has announced for next week. He has covered 3 chapters so far and I am not able to make head or tail of it. What are we going to do?’ Sid resonates his friends feeling, ‘Yes, am worried too. Wonder what he will ask in the quiz.’ he replies, his eyes still fixated on the book in his hand. ‘I will catch up with you at school’. Sid hangs up the phone and hurries on to the next page. It read –

‘There is so much I have to share. It took me many years to get there, some I stumbled upon myself and some discovered by others who could dare.’

    Sid continues reading –

‘Each pearl of wisdom is precious and rare. Pick them up one by one if you care. Put it together as you get there, keep at it and the most precious gift will be your’s to bare.

There are many who will learn new stuff TOMORROW. There are many who are yet to learn from the PAST. But there are only some who learn TODAY and a few who learn NOW’

Couldn’t have been more apt, Sid thinks to himself. In school he wasn’t attentive most of the time, at home he found reasons to keep himself from studying, at tuitions he felt there was something he could pick up later or do tomorrow. In short there was little time that he spent on learning TODAY and  NOW.

Vic and his other friends did spend more time learning today and now, each day, he thought to himself. It was a revelation to Sid. He looks for his math text book and class notes, and starts going through it, I want to try it NOW!

Days go by. These days have been tough for Sid. Ever since he had read about learning ‘Now’, it had got etched in his mind. He found it tough, but he tried to be attentive in class, focused at his tuitions and learnt by himself at home daily. It wasn’t natural for him and he struggled each time. But he was also conscious of the fact that not learning ‘Now’ meant, he was then having more things to learn from the past, and more things to learn in the future. So he keeps at it.

Its the eve before the quiz is due. Sid finds himself more comfortable with the 3 chapters that were to be prepared than he would have imagined. He goes through the remaining few problems and by the time its night, Sid is too tired and hits the bed. He couldn’t spend the night like in the past sitting with his books. He also forgets to put the Math textbook below his pillow, his usual quirk before his test or exam.

Next day at school, Sid is all worried as the Math session begins. As usual he has butterflies in his stomach as Mr. DSouza is passing the quiz question sheets. The quiz is on. Sid looks at the paper and to his surprise, the questions look relatable. He reaches for the pen and starts working on the answer. Sid had never hit the answer paper so fast in Math before. His friends were exchanging glances, but Sid wasn’t looking around this time. What’s up with Sid they thought.

The quiz ends. Sid is pleasantly surprised when Mr.DSouza puts up the answers. He has got some of the answers right. Not bad, thinks Sid. Learn Today and Learn Now, he thinks to himself. I wonder what the wise man has written next. Sid can’t wait to reach home and turn to the next page of the book.

    Bestest

    Hi Friends,
Bringing to you a quick preview of our book in works – ‘Bestest’. Hope you find it exciting, leave your comments and feedback and we will continue to bring you more on Sid’s journey through this latest title !
    – allisnice.com

Sid is sitting with a thick text book,  hands on his head, trying to comprehend what he is going to do, with so much to do and so little progress in his studies. His recent results do not have much to speak about. His teachers don’t have much expectations from him, but that he sits in the class without getting distracted and distracting other students. His parents have high expectations of him, and he carries the burden of living up to their expectations semester after semester, without a ray of hope. Their constant nagging to study makes him find excuses, try to find ways to keep away from studies, and many times he finds himself having to sit staring at his book like he is currently doing.

His childhood pal Vic is on the other hand is doing quite well. He is enthusiastic about his studies, is active and attentive during class, he is able to comprehend all of his subjects and it shows in his results. He is one of the top students in the class. While Sid and Vic spend good time together during their play time, the two are on their own different paths when it comes to academics. Sid often shares his dilemmas with Vic about his struggles with studies, and Vic tries to guide his friend. Sid has tried following Vic’s advice, but hasn’t seen much of success.

For improving his scores, Sid’s parents have enrolled him in a good tuition class. There are some signs of improvement, but Sid still has miles to go. The only respite that Sid has is that his friends  accept him the way he is. Some of them face similar realities like Sid and they empathise with each other. Vic on the other hand is also part of this circle of colleagues who fare well. To Sid and his friends, the  discussions, jokes and all the books that this circle find fun and happening, are geeky and outright boring. Sid often chides Vic about it by saying that he is part of the ‘Test Re-test’ group and Vic is part of the ‘Best Test’ group. The only reading that Sid enjoys are comic books from the nearby book store, where he gets the reused ones for a good deal using some of his pocket money.

The story goes on. One fine day, Sid is at the book store when his eyes fall on an old, soiled book – ‘My Better, Best, Bestest Journeys’ in one corner of the store. Sid finds an uncanny resemblance of the book title with Vic’s ‘Best Test’ group. What a coincidence says Sid to himself. That day he decides to pick up this book instead of a comic. What is the book about, who wrote it, what is this Bestest Journey about are the questions going on in Sid’s mind.

Sid gets home, gets fresh, takes out the book from his bag and opens it. The first page reads – I write this for you, to help you on your academic journey to excel and reach your full potential. No matter what is your background, where you come from, how good you are at studies, what your scores are today. In this book I write about my journey that will help you in your academic journey –  from being one of the rest, to becoming one of the best. Good Luck.

Bringing to you Sid’s story and the hidden journey of a man of wisdom in our upcoming title – Bestest – The 5 stages to academic excellence
